MASSACHUSETTS
Summer
Stages Dance is a three-week
intensive summer workshop and retreat, where
committed young dancers and choreographers come
together with accomplished faculty drawn from the
country's leading dance companies to create and
present new work. The program was founded in
1996 by Amy Spencer and Richard Colton and takes
place in a new, state-of-the-art facility at
Concord Academy, an independent secondary school
where the arts are a central part of the
curriculum. At the center of the
program's philosophy is the commitment to
providing a complete artistic experience
for each dancer: personal participation in the
creative process. At Summer Stages Dance
each member of the workshop community - faculty,
dancers, and choreography fellows - enjoys the experience
of creating new work. Technique and
performance are important parts of the workshop,
but they are place in a supporting role to the act
of creation. Each week of the workshop ends
with a public performance and audience discussion
by a resident faculty artist, and the work of the
student choreographers and workshop dancers is
showcased in a closing-night event. For more
